Eclipse

Today was a total eclipse, if you hadn’t heard. It was a huge deal because it was visible across a huge portion of the country, which is pretty rare. Turns out that New Hampshire was one of the best places to see it, with the northern part of the state being in the path of totality. I was not in the path of totality, but decided to setup my camera and shoot it anyway.

I hadn’t planned to shoot the eclipse this year, but an ad for a solar filter on sale got me into it. Fast forward to today and I had a whole setup in my backyard, complete with a tarp, an umbrella, a chair, and snacks. I went out at 1 PM to prepare for the eclipse that began around 2:10. I had my camera on a tripod, in crop mode with my 28 – 300mm lens. It wasn’t as zoomed as it could have been but it was good enough. The boys came home from school just as the moon was starting to cover the sun.

We didn’t get totality, but we got what I’d call most of the eclipse. It never got nighttime dark, but it did get very gray and weird out. It got cold and bees started coming out, which was weird.

The direction of the moon was interesting: under and up. I didn’t get any fancy coronas or anything, but I put together a composite in the shape of the moon’s arc. It isn’t as amazing as totality photos, but it’s mine so I like it. If I had really thought about it, I might have planned a night up north to get in the path of totality. Oh well, maybe I’ll travel to Florida for the next one đŸ˜‰

Here’s a couple shots – one with color simulating what it looked like through glasses and one without, which is how they came out of camera.
