Music

This page is devoted to the music that I listen to, the bands I like, and the reasons why. I listen to a lot of different generes: pop, rock, alternative, orchestral, and even a little hip-hop, but my favorite music is generally pop-like in some way. It may be rock, alternative, or emo, but it will have some element of upbeat pop in it. I am also a fan of complex and meaningful lyrics, which most of the music that I listen to contains. The following is a list of my favorite artists and why I like them. Some have descriptions, some don’t; I will be filling in the blank spots as time goes on.

My Favorite Bands

Panic! At The Disco

Panic! At The Disco is one of the most recent artists that I listen to. I saw their video for I Write Sins Not Tragedies during a set change at the Fall Out Boy concert that Sally and I went to see in March. The music was catchy, and I happened to see a link to their music on the site about another artist I was researching after the concert. I downloaded their album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, from iTunes and have fallen in love with it. People say that they are a lot like Fall Out Boy, but their music is actually much more techno/emo influenced, which is quite a genere. I think that the album is great! My favorite songs are Camisado, Lying is the Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off, I Write Sins Not Tragedies, and Build God, Then We’ll Talk. Sally and I saw them in concert in July and they were great! The music is definitely different, but there’s nothing wrong with doing something new.

The Hush Sound

I found out about The Hush Sound on Fall Out Boy’s Black Clouds and Underdogs Tour. They opened the show, which gave me a good taste of their music. It is a mixture of folk-rock and it’s pretty cool. All of the band members sing, but the majority is done by a lead male who plays guitar, and a lead female who plays the piano. The mix of male and female vocals really gives The Hush Sound a unique sound. I heard their song Crawling Towards The Sun at the Fall Out Boy concert during a set change. I downloaded ther album from iTunes that night. My favorite songs are Crawling Towards The Sun, Momentum, My Apoligies, and The Market from their first album, So Sudden, and We Intertwined, A Dark Congregation, Lightouse, Don’t Wake Me Up, and Wine Red from their newest album: Like Vines.

Fall Out Boy

I started listening to Fall Out Boy after I heard Sugar We’re Going Down on the radio and started searching for the artist that sang the ‘cock it and pull it’ song. It took a while, but I eventually found out who it was and downloaded their current album, From Under The Cork Tree. I listened to it the whole way through and it turned out to be one of the first albums in a long time on which I liked every song. I was really fond of the complex (and often hard to understand) lyrics as well as the voice of their lead singer, Patrick Stump. He has a bit of vibrato in his voice that seems out of place in alternative music, but makes Fall Out Boy very unique. I liked the music on From Under The Cork Tree so much that I bought their first album,Take This To Your Grave. My favorite songs are Sugar, We’re Going Down, Dance, Dance, XO, The Music or The Misery, Grand Theft Autumn, and Chicago is So Two Years Ago.

The All-American Rejects

I became interested in The All-American Rejects around the same time that I started listening to Fall Out Boy. I really liked Dirty Little Secret, so I downloaded their album. I saw them on tour with Fall Out Boy, and they were amazing.

I became interested in Jack Johnson after overhearing some people in Senate talk about it and listening to a couple of songs. I currently own In Between Dreams and really enjoy it. His music is very relaxed and touches on the simple things in life. It is really nice to listen to on a mild summer day with the windows down.

I can thank the iTunes Free Single of the Week for my interest in Acceptance. After downloading Different from iTunes for free, I decided to take a look at the rest of the album. They are a rock band like Fall Out Boy or The Hush Sound. They do a lot of layering in their music and I really like the lyrics.

Phases

I tend to listen to new music in phases. I become interested in an artist or a band and start blaring everything that I can find of theirs. My phases usually last for a month or more. Most of the time I continue to listen to an artist’s music after ‘phasing’ it, but there have been times where I haven’t retained interest in the artist (let’s call those mistaken phases). It is hard to define what causes a music phase for me, but it doesn’t really have anything to do with how often I listen to the artist afterwards. I never phased many of my all time favorite artists. The following list contains my most prominent phases in reverse-chronological order.
