My New RAID

Tell me if you’ve heard this story before: I’ve done some casual research on a new product I want to get at some point in time, a Black Friday sale pops up, and boom I buy it at a discount. Well here’s one more. Remember my posts about my multi-tier backup strategy, starting with my RAIDs? Remember how I planned to upgrade from a 4 TB RAID to an 8 TB RAID in the next couple years? Well I found a deal and am now the proud owner of a 12 TB RAID!

This deal popped up from OWC and it was pretty amazing. For $400 I got a new RAID enclosure with two 7200 RPM drives in it. That is a phenomenal deal. The RAID enclosure is at least $100 alone and I was struggling to find two 8 TB 7200 RPM drives for less than $400. The caveat is that the drives were “factory recertified”, which means they had to go back to the factory for firmware updates but still have zero hours of use. OWC provides a 3 year warranty and I’ve got my online backups so I’m not worried. I saved $300 on this configuration and will now have plenty of room for my photos plus more room for my Mac Museum stuff on my outgoing RAID.
