Rabbits

We’re fortunate to have wildlife that visits our back yard regularly. The most frequent animals we see are birds and deer, but we also have the occasional fox, raccoon, coydog, possum, turkey, bear, and even a bobcat. This year, rabbits have decided to join us. I had only seen them in Portsmouth up until this year when we started spotting a family in our own back yard. So far we’ve seen an adult and a child on several occasions but never together.

I captured the adult in our back field a few days ago and was excited that it let me get so close. I had gone out to trim our bushes with the electric trimmer when I spotted it in the distance. I figured the noise of the trimmer would scare it away, but it stayed still the entire time. I ran inside to grab my camera, expecting it to leave as most animals do, but it was still there.

Once again my 150 – 600mm lens to the rescue. I started far away and slowly walked toward it, getting closer and closer. I got so close that I crisply captured a bug that was on the rabbit’s nose! We’ve seen this rabbit in our side yard, back yard, and field, but this is the first time it let me get close; it usually hops furiously away. I’m glad I ran inside to try to capture a few shots – it worked out.
